Rothesay Life’s Chief Risk Officer has a team that consists of a Head of Market Risk, Chief Compliance Officer, Chief Credit Officer and a Model Risk group. The Credit Risk team’s responsibilities include internal ratings, credit analysis, portfolio analysis, deal review and approval, limits and exposures management, surveillance and counterparty risk.  The team continues to grow in response to Rothesay Life requirements, as the company looks to diversify, with credit being a key area in this.

This role will support the successful portfolio management of credit and counterparty risks within Rothesay Life across Corporate and Financial sectors. Main responsibilities include monitoring, credit analysis and reporting on a day to day basis.



=         Support the successful portfolio management of credit and counterparty risk within Rothesay Life

=         Perform fundamental credit analysis on financial institutions to which RL have investment and/or counterparty exposures, including derivatives, longevity swaps, or investments in fixed income securities. Sector coverage mainly includes banks, life and non-life (re)insurance companies, and money market funds. 

=         Provide day-to-day support to the senior credit analyst and preparation of materials for consideration by the RL’s Credit and Investment Committee(s).  

=         Develop and maintain a good knowledge of FIG names, including their business and financial risk profiles, and understand the impacts of their credit profiles based on new developments. 

=         On a daily basis monitor rating actions, company announcements and news flow of FIG names within the RL investment and counterparty portfolio.

=         Contribute to or conduct periodic credit reviews of a single name or a sector to help re-caliberate risk appetite for RL’s exposures, working closely with the First line stakeholders. 

=         Assess the appropriateness of external credit ratings and provide support in assigning internal credit ratings, where relevant. In doing so, documenting their views in the relevant Risk/Investment Committee(s) memos.

=         Provide support to day-to-day investment and counterparty risk management activities from a Credit risk perspective, such as responding to requests/queries from other teams or verifying details of new investments

=         Aggregate information from a variety of sources to create detailed and accurate reports to monitor limit compliance for counterparty or investment risks on a regular basis, ensuring a strong and robust risk control environment

=         Analyse and understand observations from MI reports and effectively communicate them to relevant stakeholders. Respond to questions from various internal stakeholders across first (portfolio managers, finance, capital and operations) and second line functions. Conduct investigation on a pro-active basis, where necessary.

=         Provide support to the wider Credit risk team in the monitoring of RL’s broader investment portfolio across other asset classes, monitoring compliance with credit risk limits and communication of credit information to relevant stakeholders within RL on a timely basis.


Skills & Experience:



=         Undergraduate, holding a degree in a numerical discipline.

=         3+ years banking/insurance/asset management/rating agencies experience covering the financial institutions sector, ideally major banks and (re)insurers but not essential

=         Strong analytical skills in performing fundamental credit analysis on financial institutions that can be applied to quantitative and qualitative data

=         Exposure to counterparty risk management with working knowledge of FX, rates and credit derivatives, as well as trading documentations, is desirable

=         Great attention to detail and self-confidence to provide challenge of existing processes;

=         Excellent time management and ability to prioritise workload appropriately;

=         Ability to focus in an open environment, working independently;

=         Ability to work well within a team environment and participate in department/team projects
