Capital Analyst

Job title:           Capital Analyst 

Reporting to:    Strategic Programme Manager

Contract:          Permanent

This role sits within RL’s Capital Actuarial team. The tasks of the team are varied; the main focus of the role is to help develop methodologies and tools to enable RL to i) understand the capital and balance sheet impact of key strategic and business decisions, ii) maintain its market-leading position via sophisticated capital management, and iii) fulfil its regulatory obligations.

The main activities currently being undertaken by the RL Capital team which the Capital Analyst will likely be involved in initially:

=         Development of the RL Solvency II full internal model

=         Major model change applications and ongoing maintenance of RL’s approved Solvency II partial internal model

=         Other technical capital projects as needed

The role would suit an individual with strong analytical / technical capabilities who is looking to further develop and apply these skills in a fast-moving and complex environment. In addition, the role will require the presentation and communication of technical methodologies and results in a compelling, concise manner to both internal and external stakeholders. Therefore, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate accomplished written and oral communications.

The responsibilities of the role include:

=         together with the Strategic Programme Manager and the Capital team, help identify and prioritise various projects and activities and be involved in defining the overall approach, milestones, and resourcing requirements

=         design and conduct complex analysis, drawing on standard mathematical models and statistical techniques, as well as other methodologies across RL

=         develop robust, user friendly tools to formalise analysis and support business decisions on an ongoing basis

=         help draft methodology & results documentation and other written deliverables for use in communication to internal and external stakeholders

=         in conjunction with the Strategic Programme Manager and the Capital team, assist in the planning and tracking of key activities being undertaken

=         contributing to the overall successful delivery of relevant projects and activities owned by the Capital team


Skills & Experience:

=         Skills

o    Strong analytical and statistical ability, able to carry out and design complex analyses drawing on a range of approaches and techniques

o    Good written and oral communication skills, able to synthesise complex / detailed information to distil key messages appropriate for senior audiences

o    Self-starter with the ability to take ownership of own work and propose solutions to issues and/or potential next steps

o    The ideal candidate will enjoy working with a wide range of people, and be comfortable being in an environment where plans can change rapidly

o    Well-rounded with energy, personal impact and robust personality with the ability to quickly build rapport

o    Able to use a range of approaches to win active support and commitment to a desired course of action


=         Experience


o     2+ years of relevant work experience in a complex environment

o     Strong mathematical / technical background and experience (either via work experience or academic qualifications)

o     High degree of IT literacy ideally with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Project, Excel,

Word and PowerPoint

o     Possess a degree from a leading university in a relevant subject e.g. mathematics, economics, finance, etc.


o     Experience of working on large, complex projects

o     Relevant industry qualifications and experience
